Suli Breaks - Why I Hate School But Love Education [Official Spoken Word Video]

  • Added:  4 years ago
  • Get tickets to my LIVE SHOW at THE ROCK TOWER [LONDON] on 25th August: here:

The Latest Spoken Word Video from Suli Breaks.

As the cyclical and seemingly never ending debate about education rages on, the topic - somewhat ironically, often poses more questions than it provides answers.

But what is the value of mainstream schooling? Why is it that some of the most high profile and successful figures within the Western world openly admit to never having completed any form of higher learning?

Paying homage to Jefferson Bethke's "Why I Hate Religion but Love Jesus", a piece that received 22 million views in the space of a week, I address a number of these issues in my offering "Why I Hate School, but Love Education".

With scores of school leavers wanting to further their education with no guarantee of their dream job at the end of it, we should ask ourselves whether qualifications still hold the same value now as they did in previous years?

Does success in the school system correlate to success in life? Or is the school system simply geared towards fact retention and regurgitation?

    What is true education?

Education should be inspiring the mind, helping build ideas, and sparking creativity but instead it's about memorizing stuff to get a good grade. And then forgetting it the next day. Did you know that school was created to produce factory workers and simple minded rule obeyers. Why would someone successful want the rest of the world to be smart? It would just mean more competition most people high up in the game of life only wish to climb up off the backs of others. If I didn't. Communicate this clearly in sorry. But why wouldn't the people in power want robots? Robots are way easy to control.

do what you want, want to be a garbage cleaner? study yourself, because "school" wants us to be what they want, they want us all to be someone like Albert einstein, but they should know not everyone wants to be like Albert einstein, we should do what we want so we can show everyone who we are, what we like, and why we're so unique. school sucks in all ways, it's like an unnecessary entry to go to university.

I believe that education is working hard for what you believe in and what kind of person you want to be. For example, I want to be an artist, so that is what I focus on, not the essay on how the French started the French Revolution and the Terror that occurred after.

What do you think education is?

Im considered a top notch student but all of my knowledge is from my laptop and ipad which my mother tells me to not watch all the time, im smart because of what i did but not school. You learn what you want, not what your forced.

I don't agree with this exactly. I believe hard work and education are related. If you work hard at understanding the material then it teaches you discipline and the means to understandimg the world around you which leads to wisdom. I believe what he is trying to say that if you bs education then you are wasting your money because you don't take the time to actually learn the material. People say grades dont matter in college but I believe they do because it shows your work ethic and work ethic is important in the real world. Regardless, people work hard in different ways besides education so people like bill gates ect. Who didn't gradudate from a higher institution had the wisdom to apply it to everyday life and ended up being successful. Education provides a means to be great but you have to unlock that end result yourself.

School is just a factory where they produce robots (humans) to do some mundane boring task for the rest of their life.
If you think about it, we spend 1/4 of our life in School, nearly 15 years are spent in school,
one would think that spending that many years studying, we would all be Shakespeare and Einstein, but all we are qualified for is a job at McDonalds. If we want a real job that pays well, then guess what, we need to spends thousands of dollars, and go to an actual good college and spend another 4 to 8 years studying, while sinking in Student Debt
and with the increase in population, its hard to find a job even with a degree

good luck paying that debt off, or working at McDonalds for the rest of your life

"There is more than one way to be an educated man." That is one hell of a true statement. 75% of my knowledge, I learned on myself, not school. The 25% of what I learned from school is the basic needs of living, but also things that kept me interested. I love learning and being educated, but the way school lectures is not the way I want to learn. A vast majority of what school teaches, I'm not interested. Their forcefulness upon students to learn a rigid subject, is wrong, because everyone learns differently. I take more time than most of my classmates to complete an assignment, because I work differently. Sometimes, I don't even complete it. Lets go back to how 75% of my knowledge is because I learned it on myself. I learned that much, because it was under my own time constraint and interest, whereas a majority of the subjects in school, are the complete antithesis of that. Here is what I learned on my own: Art, Animation, Story writing, Musical Composition, ethics, deep analyzation, extensive vocabulary/terminology, more complexed sense of logic, humanity, understanding one another, and a whole lot more. The importance about these categories, is not only do they interest me, they are essential to every aspect of my life. Here is what school taught me: Good argumentative essays, a little bit from my 9th grade history class, the basics, and that's about it. I'm a straight C student in my academics, but has no affect on my higher knowledge. So, what I learned on my own has helped me greatly than most of what school could have ever taught me in 10 years. I have great work ethic and one hell of a workaholic, but the school system just doesn't do it for me. I love learning, but I despise school.

"There are subjects such as Geometry, that will help you greatly in measuring something and finding the area of it." Yes, but because of the unlimited resources we have nowadays, I can easily just search it up and find out how to do it. Must I repeat: 75% of my knowledge, I learned on my own. By trying to find the area for lets say, the floor of a bathroom, I'm choosing to do it because I need to, and not forced to. I want to learn it. So because of the unlimited resources nowadays, we can easily find out how to solve these problems.

"If you get a BA/BS, then you will have a greater chance in aiming to a higher positioning job."
While I can't disagree, if your work ethic and achievements are above average, and especially at a young age, entrepreneurs will be very impressed. Why at a young age? Mainly because people would not expect a kid to do for example, high ranking coding, at that age, which would impress them greatly. It would give them the idea: "If this kid keeps doing this, I can't imagine what greatness he/she would bring out." One person in particular, would be Katy Perry, who is a high school dropout. We all know her for her cultural affect because of her popular songs. Because she excels in this area, who would deny her acceptance to sing, because she doesn't have a BA/BS? Literally no one would. Now lets break down someone who is no where near as popular as her, but got a similar reputation. Eddy Zhong, the only asian kid who doesn't know how to do math, who has straight C's, has booted a technology company at the age of 16, that created the Blanc smartwatch. So while getting a BA/BS may increase your chances at aiming for a higher positioning job, working to the excel level of what you want to pursue, may also give you great chances too.

I might add some more stuff if they ever come in to my head later.

I love education but hate school. I hate sitting for 6 hours. Why can't we move around and have more hands on projects? Our teachers are unpaid so we don't have the best. And if I don't have a good teacher I'm not getting good education. Once my substitute teacher spelled "do" instead of "due"! She fucking misspelled due! I hate learning meaningless things. Did you know grasshoppers and tomatoes have the same amount of chromosomes? Yet I barely know a thing about health, taxes, money in general, current events, etc. I can't work because I'm constantly thinking of doing something better. And I hate when I am actually doing work other kids have to mess around and be distracting and rude. Fuck public schools.

School is still veey importanr for a lot of reasons. You dont convince me when you mentiom all of the dropouts that became successfull. I can play that game too. There is a LOT of famous people that DID finish college, for exampleNatalie Portman, John Legend, Emma Watson, Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hanks, Arnold Schwarzenegger and the list goes on. Don't make general conclusions that "yeah school is bad", let's don't give a shit about school. School has taught me so much and it's much more than what the actual subjects is teaching me. School has taught me patience, completing difficult task, I have the ability to learn other things outside of school without giving up easily, I can push myself hard, I know I can get good at anything if I just put in the time to it, I've learned to learn, and I've learned responsibility and planning. School is preparing me for the future and it does a really good job. Much better than dropping out and risking my whole future.

I really believe in this video. Education should make you excited, have a need to learn, and open your mind Infinitely. Most of things they teach at schools are facts, equations, and unnecessary homework. Just because you have the best grades doesn't guarantee you a job or that you'll be happy with what you do after school. My need to be free and grow as a person is stronger than to be trapped not achieving my dreams.

I looked up this video cause I again stayed home from school. not because I was sick, I just didn't feel like it's worth it. all the pointless assignments such as homework, that I feel is just work that isn't there to help us learn, only to make or break who graduates and who doesn't. I could understand the subject perfectly and get good test scores consecutively. But it's the homework that kills me. If I don't feel it's worth hours of my time, I won't do it. But I'm gonna keep that quote in the back of my mind from now on.
"If you don't build your dreams, someone else will hire you to build theirs."

Modern day education is broken, because it is designed to breed masses of obedient workers. I began skipping school in the 10th grade. Not to hang out with friends, but to go meet with local executives who wished to hire me as an independent web developer.

  • Mr. Womb: Lord of Unmerciful Torment

First off, bravo on the John Williams music from the "Sunshine" movie soundtrack -- one of the best, and a brilliant choice for the content.

Second, we're all building someone else's dream all the time. Every time you buy a Pepsi or load of bread, new hoodie, soap, drive your car, etc. It's hard to escape. You meant it in terms of occupation, but it's a slippery slope.

And third, totally agree with scholastic standards. I dropped out my junior year of high school, and I'm grateful for the fundamentals they bestowed upon me in such an uninspired fashion. But they can only teach so much before you realize the hypocrisy and propaganda laden throughout the curriculum. I had much more prolific results from the education I sought out myself, guided by my personal passions in tandem with objective truth. Amen to this man's insight. Self education is soooo much fun and as interesting as you want it. And school can't teach creativity, which is both necessity's finest tool and the mother of modern invention.

Shout out to all my home university frat brothers and sorority sisters. Education is priceless...
