Sexism is a helpful parallel. Just as many men have come to understand that - being raised in a patriarch society - they INHERENTLY have some sexist ways of thinking without knowing it. It doesn't mean they're evil. Many men can admit that they have some sexist views or ways of thinking - and can then be open to being educated and enlightened.

The problem is that - many white people cannot accept that - being raised in a racist society - they INHERENTLY have some racist ways of thinking without knowing it. They cannot admit that they have some racist views and instead get offended and want to start arguing and defending themselves when it's pointed out as a possibility. There's no interest in being educated or enlightened - only blaming and fighting with the person who brings it to their attention.

Roots every species has a dominant. The dominant sex among humans is male. Why are we supposed to ignore biology and pretend that there is no difference between the genders. Most men acknowledge this and take it as a privilege/responsibility. Pushing men out of their natural roles is having a negative impact on society

Race and gender are completely different. Biology doesn't have different roles for race. That's why people ignore it for the most part

Racism is strictly about the color of your skin. Period. Your beliefs, wants, ethnicity, religion, intelligence, hopes, dreams, and desires are literally brought down to the color of your skin. In America if your skin is white you are allowed to have those desires, hopes, and dreams. They are your right. However, if you are one of the "OTHERS," meaning your skin is any color other than white, the odds are that at some point in the established day to day way that Americans operate you will come face to face with a practice that reeks of discrimination. That said, life is what you make it. Don't allow an encounter with an idiot to ruin you. No racism is not dead. The fact that you refuse to acknowledge means you are part of the problem, and yes we are moving backward not forward in handling the issue of racial inequality in America. The very minute unarmed black men started being gunned down in the street by law enforcement, America started moving backward on race relations.

"Only a racist sees racism"...Racism is not a gene, it is not inherited, it is demonstrated by one who's own mind allows it to be self ignited by their own internal hate senses, by that or one who is different. Humanity is history, history is not forgotten but made whole by ones personal, internal blindness towards that which is different and instead believes people are as simple as what we are, Humans by nature, Humanity by action, not cause, not flaws but personal awareness and positive outlooks.

Racism wasnt really discussed in my household growing up, because my parents felt all they had to teach me was treat others how you want to be treated, and that Jesus loves everyone. It just kind of went without saying that even if someone looked different from myself I still treated them with kindness. I didn't even really know what racism was until I got older and heard people on the news band stuff talking about it. I had never treated anybody different because of their looks because it never occurred to me to ever do that. I think that is how we should raise the future generation (not ignorantly), but to redefine race to mean the HUMAN RACE, and that skin color is no different than eye or hair color.

  • Crystal Surber

Ok so yes i think there are some people that are racist in every race. That they teach their kids to become like that. I also see how far every race has come in America. There's more inter racial dating thats accepted now.
In movies to be honest im not sure how many Native Americans that really want to act. I say this because of the comments down below. Now a days a lot of citizens have black descendants , Native American, Italian and other races as a combination. Then u have to think how many people in that race want to act or others job they want to do. To all Native Americans if u want to act in Hollywood go for it. Stand up for yourselves and demand to be heard.
Im actually tired of white people playing Asian roles, or others.
I will say this every race has their own story for being discriminated against. Yes I look white but I have been discriminated because I look white. The difference is that im not whinning or complaining. I just move on to other things. The real issue should be teaching our kids to love themselves and others.
White people have been there for black communities and the same for black people helping in white communities and other racial communities as well. Being in the present every race has neighbors where there are lots of races.

As a Native American woman I must agree that I hate that I have to have talks with my young children about race, and how people might view them.   The changes come when changes happen in the household and I hope when my children become adults racism with be almost none existent in our country.

I really wish that during this conversation that racism is not always taught with words. But racism is also taught through behavior and how you handle a racial situation. 93% of communication is non verbal. For example, (hypothetical situation) if you are at the mall shopping with your 8 year old son a few people approach you to use your phone because their phones had died. If you say yes to all the white people and no to black and brown people. Your 8 year old son will pick up on that behavior.

Good honest hardworking Indian Americans who have stayed there for over 20 years are being assaulted and killed because they are mistaken for Arabs and you are still wondering whether America is racist??? These Indians were not harmed by American children, but by grown idiotic American men. This is the time when American communities should come out in support against hate crimes, but you don't even address or acknowledge it.

For once i agree with Whoopi. Sometimes I cringe when shes talking about race because i feel like she tries to be so inclusive that she misses the point but she was just unapologetically honest today and I appreciate it. Don't feel the need to apologize for slavery, but if you are contributing to the white supremacist systems in place, then you should feel guilty. All we are asking now is that white people help dismantle the systems in place that keep them privileged.

The thing is, a lot of white families think "well, we have black friends, my kids go to school with all races, our great neighbors are indian, race hasn't caused an ISSUE in our lives, so we dont need to talk to our kids."

The thing is, EVEN IF there are sooo many colors and races in your kid's lives, and you are the poster family for diversity and acceptance, YOU as a parent need to educate your kids on the history of race and the current racial climate. Not everyone is going to be as open as you or your kids, and they need to know that too.

There is no GOOD reason to not talk about race with your kids. It's not like SEX, they can't just learn it on the streets. Why? Because its next to impossible to learn the unbiased TRUTH about Race in the country. EVERYONE has an opinion. Its easy to learn the unbiased truth about sex. Its science.

+Derrika Clements I can't speak for law school. Maybe black women are more likely to go to law school. I have a friend who is a black woman who is going now. My experience is with accounting and engineering. I have been in the work force for 17 years, and I don't believe that I have ever worked with a black woman with an accounting or engineering degree. We are required to interview everyone who applies to a position, so it isn't as if their resumes are getting thrown out. Black people are very rare in my field, so they are given huge preference in hiring. Honestly, as a supervisor, I really don't care that much about degrees. I'll take someone who is quick witted, decisive, and has problem solving skills every time, regardless of whether they have a degree or not. The last hire I made I was restricted to people with college degrees, and I got stuck with a dud.

    • Derrika Clements
      Derrika Clements 15 days ago

maybe its the school you went to. i have many friends who graduated and went to law school one who actually went to Harvard Law post grad, one who graduated in the tech field, one graduated from one of the top business programs in the country, i graduated with a psych degree, and our nursing program at my school is one of the most difficult to get into and i know a few who graduated from that.

    • white deion
      white deion 15 days ago

Derrika Clements that's because black women as a whole get degrees in easy fields that don't pay well. I had zero graduate with me with a bachelors in accounting and very few in business or any stem fields.

    • Derrika Clements
      Derrika Clements 17 days ago

that is just location targeting. White privilege is the fact that even though black women are leading among the amount of people to earn secondary degrees (in both associates as well as bachelors) yet we on average get paid 67 percent to the dollar while white women get paid 76 cents to the dollar of what a white man makes. Its the fact that white students are more likely to get lighter punishments (in both schools as well as the legal system) to people of color for similar crimes, also that a person with a white sounding name is more likely to get farther in the application process than those with ethnic names, and finally that black men are likely to be judged as looking older by cops than their white counterparts which leads to harsher reactions by those officers. Having white privilege does not mean everything is handed to you in life. It just means in certain areas of life your privilege allows you certain benefits that others may not receive. I am provided privilege based on my lighter skin in the black community and my educational background in society as a whole. I own my privileges its okay to own yours as well as long as you check them when need be

Have you seen a Trump rally? All you'll hear is "blacks" this, "Muslim, sand niggers" that. It's even more important to talk about race now when there's a president who stirs up racial tension i.e. linking all African Americans with inner city crime, not acknowledging the Jews suffering in the Holocaust and not disavowing the KKK.

All of them actually made some really great points. I love Sarah's open honesty, it seemed so personal and vulnerable of her. Sonny is right, Black and brown people are more likely to have the race conversation. Whoopi is right when by saying they don't have a choice. She's also right when she says that people should be able to explain why you voted or Trump. I, for one, am very curious. Great discussion. Of course everyone that heard it isn't going to like something they heard.

I for one personally believe that who a person votes for is their business. However, if you say or infer that you voted for Trump, I believe that a person should be able to articulate why. It's not because it's owed to anyone; rather, it's because voting for Trump is idiotic for majority of  Americans. Remember: Trump didn't win the popular vote. It's the same conundrum of wondering how people could support Hitler, another populist/nationalist. I guess to them, at that time, he made sense. We always hear about the bad Nazi soldiers, but no one ever talks about the general German population that supported them. It's not about agreeing with someone's reasons, it's about gaining an understanding even if I disagree with what I understand. You're vote is your voice, and the Bible says, " a man thinketh, so is he." I say, "as a man 'vote-th' so is he." If a person disagreed with what he said and cast their vote for him anyway, does that make sense to you? That's troubling in itself.

'People this day and age are so eager to draw the race card. That in fact is causing so many issues in today's society.'

I agree with you that people are eager to draw the race card a lot of times. However, I also believe that on the flip side, people are just as eager to dismiss that race is a major factor with a lot of issues. "Playing the race card" is a modern phenomenon because not long ago (50yrs) the card didn't exist because lots of people didn't have voices. So the issues that you speak of have always existed. It's just now, with modern tech, you can receive and output information from anywhere, at a quicker pace.

    • black luxe
      black luxe 4 months ago

shawn preston In reality, no matter your reasoning behind voting for Trump (which i have seen plenty of people try to explain) they will never agree to it or try to understand your point. To them if you voted him it automatically shows who you are. No matter if you disagree with statements he had spoken. People this day and age are so eager to draw the race card. That in fact is causing so many issues in today's society.

    • shawn preston
      shawn preston 5 months ago

I think you're missing the point. She nor I, never said that someone should have to know why you voted for Trump; what was said is that people should be able to explain why they voted for Trump. Look, you can't have it both ways. You can't be outrage when someone thinks you're racist or deplorable for voting for someone who says racist and deplorable things (which are on record), then say/think that it's no problem having a reason why. She has a reason why she voted for Hillary, she has a reason why she voted for Obama, she's said those reason plenty of times on air. You may not agree with those reasons or those candidates but the reasons are there. People aren't closed to understanding if others aren't closed to explaining. Your vote is your voice. And if give your vote to someone who is controversial and divisive then what does that say about you? Saying nothing at all leaves room for interpretation. I live in the rural deep south -- Trump country -- I know that EVERYONE who voted for Trump isn't racist because Trump voice a lot of their pain and concerns. I get it. But, don't fool yourself, that wasn't everyone's reason, though everyone wants to hide behind that reason. Most people around here wouldn't even know their racist, who's going to tell them? They're primarily around their own kind, and the mentality they have is cultural and generational, and it's fostered by the southern region environment. Southern nostalgia about its rising again never left since the civil war. Why do you think all those confederate flags still fly? Oh, let me wait...."paying homage" and respect to their "heritage." Yes, that's what you'll hear. The reality is they want to be in charge and the significant majority again. That's what making America great again looks like.  Just like the people that voted for Hitler to make Germany great and pure again, those people died or live knowing who they are.

As a Native American I never see myself in the movies. I can only relate to the character on a person level sometimes. The only time I see Native American being portrayed is when they make movies of old western days and we are being shot down. It's nice to see other races of people that aren't white on tv. But where the heck are we. We evolved and dress just like everyone else. We are here and we never left.

pcarebear1 I'm Central American too and I would say that I have heard from my family and other Central Americans calling each other inditos or Indios as an offensive thing to say. But I don't understand most Latinos are mestizos, we shouldn't be using the term indigenous as an offensive term because that's who we are and we should embrace it and be proud about. So when ppl call me indita I take that with pride porque eso es lo que soy y son mis raíces. 💪🏼

Ms. Moses I have to agree with you. I had a classmate that said the exact same thing. He was Cherokee from NC and he expressed how it could be so lonely too. I'm Central American and Anglo-American but I was raised by my adoptive nana (Lumbee from NC) and maternal abuela (from Nicaragua). It was until I was in late 20s I figured out why I couldn't blend with mainstream Americans and "modern" Latinos. I grew up with NA grandmothers (just bilingual lol) so my values and beliefs are theirs. It is very hard, as Central American I've heard (directly and indirectly) racist jokes about my NA heritage from other Latinos. Just wanted to let you know you aren't alone and there are DEFINITELY a lot of NA people still around. And don't believe the History Channel, the Mayans weren't taken by aliens ;)

As a native it is annoying that we are totally forgotten in conversations. We exist too. We watch the same music, movies and media as the rest of people around. I understand proper representation or more representation is important but imagine being not in the picture at all to begin with. I don't want to watch movies like dancing with wolves in order to see my people. We are in the present as well. +Joanna X And i don't relate with Latinos on tv as being representation of me or my people. Being a Native American is a unique identity. But i do get happy for others when they get their exposure. Latinos and asians need more of it.

What I will teach my black children is to love themselves first and foremost. When you love yourself the world is a less threatening place. When you love yourself you have a strong sense of belonging so the OTHER doesn't represent a threat. When you are proud and unapologetic of who you are, respect and understanding of others become naturally a part of your personality.

Actually, as a person of color, it is really hard to understand how people can listen to what was being said at his rallies and the pandering that he did to white supremacists, without drawing that conclusion. It either takes an uncanny ability to not hear all of that negative rhetoric or, at the very least, be comfortable with it. So yes, it is very understandable, simplistic yes, but understandable that they could draw that conclusion.

Right, keep trying to justify your bigotry and despicable attitudes. Most, if not all of the problems in the middle east and for that matter the world are due to western intervention and an era of colonialism which has stripped much of the planet and its inhabitants of resources, food and wealth and strips those people of rights and protections in an international setting and the west can still do whatever it wants in these countries. Invade, bomb, assassinate individuals whatever they want to do, and since they control the media the whole world around it is their narrative that is always perpetuated throughout the entire world. Again i am not fooled by your story. Thats what a lot of these wholesome christians do, they go on message boards and lie and claim to be muslims once their despicable narrative is exposed to try and make it seem okay because hey im a muslim so i can say bad things about them. This is what Christians did all throughout history also. They destroyed other peoples religious texts, re-wrote them through their perspective and demonized them and controlled the entire narrative. What happened to viking legends and books? Celtics? Native americans? Germanic tribes? Oh right, they have no texts. The only ones that exist about them are written by christians and it paints them in very unfavorable terms. What a surprise. Give me a break. This is precisely what they are doing to muslims right now, and precisely what they did to jews a century ago. This demonization campaign is not something new in christianity, it is an all too familiar story. Also, being anti islamic and racist are not mutually exclusive and there is probably a great correlation between the two. All these anti-muslim individuals are typically anti-black lives matter and have a nasty agenda in that topic too. Again, grow up. Learn tolerance and respect for other peoples and cultures. It will take you and your people a long way and has been missing from christianity since time immemorial.

Yup! I am constantly comforting my 7 year old over the derogatory statements made by children raised in bigoted households. It's funny because people always say "don't bring up race, don't make this a race thing" and my personal favorite "don't play the race card" yet racism is so prevalent in our daily lives, yet we are not allowed to call a cow a cow. How about you stop telling people how they can feel? or what they should feel? because it makes you uncomfortable. Just because it's not your experience doesn't mean it's not real or made up. I am a firm believer that what you say behind closed doors is who you are! if you use racial slurs that is who you are! own it!
