hey guys, just in case you meet a trump supporter who tells you that the civil war was fought because it was on states' rights vs. federal rights, just know that it was states' rights vs. federal rights on the matter of slavery, so yes, slavery was the fucking cause of the civil war.

The Civil War didn't happen because of slavery. Read about the Battle of Fort Sumter. And the Emancipation Proclamation was a way to weaken the Confederacy, not some altruistic thing. All it said was "if you come fight for us, we'll overlook that you were a slave." Even the 13th Amendment didn't fully abolish slavery, it just required that you be convicted of a crime first, which is why prisoners are modern slaves.

Reading this sent electric chills up my spine and spiked the hair on the back of my neck. The pages of history echo like they're being read over a loud speaker. This is beyond ironic.

"I am not a Know-Nothing. That is certain. How could I be? How can any one who abhors the oppression of negroes, be in favor of degrading classes of white people? Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we begin by declaring that "all men are created equal." We now practically read it "all men are created equal, except negroes." When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read "all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and catholics." When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty-to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy." -Abraham Lincoln

So I know this is a bit knit picky but the civil war didn't start because of slavery. The civil war started because the south didn't like the imbalance of industry between the south and the north with the north having most of the industry and the south having most of the agriculture which makes sense because of ya know slave labor. The reason we say its because of slavery is because that is what we know about it but ending slavery was just because near the end of the war knowing how much the soldiers on both sides have suffered they wanted to make the war worth something because as it stood the war was being fought for nothing. So Lincoln decided to sign the emancipation proclamation to give the soldiers fighting for the union a purpose. Actually Lincoln wasn't that liberal himself. He believed that black people should be free but he did not think it was ok for whites and blacks to have sexual relations. Fun facts for ya.

And the blacks love Donald Trump. he's not president for 1 year, he wants to renegotiate the law that gave freedom to black people from the hands of monsters. The Civil War happened because there can't be peace when an entire group is being killed by cold hearted people, and it wasn't profitable to the United States anymore, Europe had already banished slavery. And the United States couldn't call themselves the land of the free while enslaving other people. The fact that no one is shocked by his monstrous statement is what worry me the most. We've all become numb to his fascist rhetoric. He can say and do whatever he wants people aren't shocked anymore. And that's when incapable presidents become real dictators, people let them do it for years because the entire population accept their mediocrity as a fact.

I'm sorry I am not an american but the Civil War was mostly to strengthen the Union. Lincoln, like most from his time was a racist douche. Emancipation was on of the end results of the Civil War and not its main goal. It would have been far cheaper and less bloody to purchase the slave and free them, as England did. I apologize if I am incorrect.

Colbert is an idiot. Check out how many slaves the Emancipation proclamation freed. zero!
According to Abraham Lincoln, Who by the way, started the so called Civil War without the consent of congress, said he did so to strengthen the Union mentioning, succession and tariffs as concerns of his. Not any concern for the plight of the black men and women and children in slavery. His distain for the black man is continually shown in his own speeches and debates, such as the Lincoln Douglas debates, Where Lincoln states, “I will say here, while upon this subject, that I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so. I have no purpose to introduce political and social equality between the white and the black races. There is a physical difference between the two, which, in my judgment, will probably forever forbid their living together upon the footing of perfect equality, and inasmuch as it becomes a necessity that there must be a difference, I, as well as Judge Douglas, am in favor of the race to which I belong having the superior position.” This being said, Lincoln plunged the States of the US into a war that took the lives of 600,000 to 800,000 of his own citizens to strengthen the power of the Federal Gov’t in which he held the most powerful position. Another note is that even if the those people had lost their lives fighting over the institution of slavery, All other nations of the earth had brains enough to end slavery peacefully and not murder their own countrymen to do so. Only Lincoln in the US was mentally deranged enough to do this. So for Donald Trump to pose the question as to whether this situation could have been worked out another way, was at least one good question he has brought to the fore. I am not a Trump or Andrew Jackson fan, But Trump’s questionings have some merit . For information on this subject, you would be well advised to read “The Real Lincoln” by Thomas DeLorenzo. It could help clear up misconceptions about this time in US History taught in our government run school system.

The Civil War wasn't because of slavery. Look at this last election, those feelings of revolution in the air after Trump won, those fears of revolution by the opposition when we hoped Clinton would win (assuming you're Democrat, swap it otherwise). That's what caused the Civil War; Lincoln got elected and the South freaked out, then both sides stared angrily at each other until the shooting started. Slaves were freed to SPITE the South, it would've taken decades to get that legislation to pass if they hadn't seceded. If we keep on demonizing the party we don't agree with, pretty soon we're going to be right back where we were 150 years ago, only now we have nukes and MOABs and a delicate electric grid.

For all you history people: guess how many slaves were freed by the emancipation proclamation?

The answer is 0. The proclamation specifically said that any slaves in the states that did not secede (like West Virginia) would remain in a condition of servitude. It only said that slaves in the rebellious states (which the Union could not control at the time) would be free. In reality, the point of it was not to free slaves, but to gain support from Britain, who opposed slavery. It also pleased former slaves, who became inspired to fight for the union and helped the war effort. But the most important reason, was that many people, as they saw the death toll pike up, had decided that keeping the US together was not worth all of the bloodshed. Only then did the war officially become about slavery. Before that, Lincoln never said he would free the slaves and the war was fought to keep the union together.

    1) Trump was likely referring to what’s known as the nullification crisis of 1832, three years into Jackson’s first term as president. Jackson threatened to send federal troops into South Carolina when the state threatened secession over federal tariffs on trade. Jackson took a firm stand on the side of the union.

    2) The civil war was not about slavery, it was about money. Lincoln himself said "I have said a hundred times, and I have now no inclination to take it back, that I believe there is no right, and ought to be no inclination in the people of the free States to enter into the slave States, and interfere with the question of slavery at all."

    Sorry libtards... wrong again

    • Duncan Stroud
      Duncan Stroud 3 months ago

He specifically said "regard to the civil war"... as in, thing that lead up to the civil war. And no, it was about tariffs. The slave issues got dragged in mainly to get the black to fight for the north.

      1. I doubt Trump can enunciate the word "nullification." But didn't he specifically say Civil War?

Sorry as usual, the liberals are right. But we all know that reality as a well established liberal bias.

Colbert should stick to schtick. All Americans, not just Jackson, saw the forces of war mounting over the 20+ years before Ft. Sumpter. And all Americans in the early spring of 1861 thought war would be averted through negotiations. Lincoln baffled the country by not attempting to prevent a war of brother against brother. Newspapers cried out "Where is Lincoln?" Well he certainly wasn't trying to end slavery. He'd insisted for years he'd purse "peace at all costs" and was not trying to end slavery with his candidacy. Colbert should better remember his history.

I'm not a Trump fan. I am a Cobert fan. However his words about Trump and Jackson were taken out of context. I know, it's humor - humor first. But Trump said IF Jackson had been later (ie, during the Civil War) there wouldn't have been one. So right there, he said he was before. He next said he wasn't happy with what was going on in regards to the Civil War ... meaning all of the divisiveness leading up to it.

    Anyway, funny as always
