Tesla's new 2170 battery cell

    How unfortunate would it be if Solid state batteries takeoff soon for Tesla anyway for the rest of us it would be awesome but for Tesla not so much, well it will because there cars will be able to have improved capacity and quicker charge times and the safety concerns of Lithium Ion batteries go away but after building that massive plant they will have to retool it which is the expensive part of building a plant is tooling it.

    Is there any logical explanation for why they can't get this same level of power density out of an 18650???

    The 18650 is already a bit big for laptops. Increasing the size is going to make it too large for most laptops. The constant desire for thinner laptops is only going to hasten the move away from cylindrical batteries to flat batteries as used in tablets and phones.

    doesn't matter how much it stores technology needs a small storage device capable of storing massive amounts of electric charge with minimal attacks from thermal dynamics , the hurdle is heat v storage and making larger batteries is the not the way, larger the battery them thermal dynamics wins , its not rocket science its chemistry.

      Is Tesla involved or investigating the new technology of "Solid State" batteries announced by the inventor of the Lithium battery, Professor John Goodenough?

      The info seems to indicate that these new batteries will far out perform Lithium; charge within minutes rather than hours; are lighter; have more power output and much less expensive to produce.

      So I have to wonder with this new tech on the horizon, if Tesla is possibly making a huge mistake in building such huge Lithium factories.

    so most important thing tesla is working on is a battery that is larger than an 18650 with a larger capacity? That's sad.

    Its always been about battery technology. In order: Cost, reliability(temperature, life expectancy), range. If this new cell cuts cost by 50% and increases reliability by 50%, everyone will flock to electric vehicles. Where the only holdout will be trucks, both big and small. Proof is in the pudding.

    You are lying. There is no change in the "Energy Density' of your same/same Lithium Ion battery. It is 50% larger inside, so it can hole 50% more power. The rest is just advertising, smoke and mirrors. It's really just plain lies. How 'bout you build something BETTER?

    With the current trend of thinner laptops I'm wondering what manufacturer would want a 21mm diameter cylinder in their product. Personally I don't mind thicker laptops so long as they have the performance to match but it's clear that with the current thinner laptops only flat types fit the bill.

    in ten years they try to revolutionize the industry by inventing a 2375 battery while the germans stack some kind of a4-sheets together to make big battery-pouches with much higher energy density with sodium and solid state glass-electrolyte that does not degrade when being loaded at high speed.

    Thankfully, the waste of these eternal batteries will never become a problem for the environement.
    300 million registered cars in America. Now all run on batteries. (800ish pounds)
    Now 300millionX800 pounds= 240,000(million pounds of waste batteries, every 6-9 years (Life of the battery, being my usual optimistic-self)

    Good tech, yes;
    Will it save the world? No
