Tesla Powerpacks + Solar Powering Kauai

  • Added:  5 months ago
  • To achieve a sustainable energy future the world needs reliable, renewable energy around the clock. The island of Kauai has an abundance of solar energy but it can only be used when the sun is shining. Kauai burns millions of gallons of fossil fuels annually to produce energy at night. Until now. Tesla’s 52 MWh Tesla Powerpack and 13 MW solar farm will store solar energy produced during the day and deliver it to the grid during the evening hours to reduce the amount of fossil fuels needed to meet energy demand. This dispatchable solar project represents the first time a utility contracted for a system of this scale that stores and delivers solar energy after sunset.

I love how they paid homage to how the Japanese, who are all throughout Hawaii, used to style their music back in the 80s and 90s coming from out West...with the track for this. That's just how they used to do that. Major props to Tesla on this accomplishment on Kauai.

Could some freelance data scientist create a map of top 100 islands ready for solar+batteries. Taking data sets from solar radiation per km2, local purchase power and share of island's money used on fossil fuel based electricity then filtering the population size between 3 000-10 000. These islands are ideal places to start the energy revolution

I'd like to see solar panels top the roofs of every house at an affordable price for all and with an affordable storage unit capable of powering that home through its night time needs. Eliminating much of the huge and outdated electrical grid and turning homes, businesses and buildings into self-sufficient energy generators rather than drains would take us great strides into the future. Getting away from fossil fuel dependency for every damn thing would help clean up the planet (which we desperately need to do before it is too late).

I will point out to Donald T. dislikers, that Elon Musk was asked to be on a Trump technology advisory board.

I also point out that a great place for these would be on the west side (Kekaha). And particularly many of us on the islands would like to see these REPLACE all of the GMO test fields (that spray pesticides near populated town of Kekaha).

He has a position on a singular council and can make no policy decisions. Meanwhile Trump is trying to bring back America's coal dependency, and remove federal subsidies for renewables, so no, I wouldn't say the Trump administration is much of a helpful ally to Elon or any other green advocate. Especially since his appointment to the EPA is a climate change denier who doesn't believe CO2 causes significant damage to our atmosphere.

I'm born in Hawaii and Hawaiian. As a native here, all we see is billionaire buying up all our Hawaii lands for so called helping others. Making pretty videos to show individuals that are not from Hawaii does not help Hawaiians and Loco's citizens who live and work here everyday. I have nothing against Tesla Comp. However we will see if Tesla is here to help or too make a buck like Facebook Mark who bought up 7 Hundred Acres of our land on Kauai. Just because Hawaii people are away from the Mainland US does mean billionaire can just buy your back yard and do whatever they want without you saying something about it. Question what would you do if the next time you looked out your house window and all you saw was GMO, Facebook, Tesla?

    • DrinksforGEEKS Hammer & Ax
DrinksforGEEKS Hammer & Ax 5 months ago

karthik11512 I get what Tesla is doing is a good thing. I'm just saying It's kind of hard to believe the next rich person to come to Hawaii with big ideas is for the little people. When all we see is companies making money off our land and the people here get nothing back. Look at Hawaii history on how we were a Kingdom to a property of US and then a state. This did not happen by the US Government, but by rich greedy companies. Tesla maybe good for our state, but lets see first what this all intends to be. We Hawaiians have been mislead to many times in History and it time to call some of their BS out.

    • karthik11512
      karthik11512 5 months ago

DrinksforGEEKS Hammer & Ax You can't compare Elon to mark, Mark zuckerburg is an asswipe buying up your land probably to build a mansion or something. What Tesla is doing is actually providing you something of value. I think it would be awesome if Tesla could become your electric utility in the future. No dependence on burning diesel for electricity.

?? What happens to all those batteries and solar panels when they can't generate electricity??

    • karthik11512
      karthik11512 5 months ago

Rud Dog Tesla batteries are in a closed loop, after the batteries lose their ability to store energy they are transported to the Gigafactory where they have dedicated space for recycling. Because batteries are not burning anything all the original material is still there, but changed in composition. They will use the recycled material to create new batteries at the same factory. As for the panels, the panels never actually stop creating energy, but after 30-40 years they will start to degrade and produce less power. The Solar gigafactory in New York also has dedicated space for recycling and just like the batteries they will reuse the material in new solar panels.
