As a leafs fan I can say I'm happy that he got traded. He had the natural skill, but from the beginning lacked the drive that could have made him into an all star. And I think the biggest problem was that he was ready to put that effort in, but I was already too late, he had the label of a coach killer. The best thing for him was to have a fresh start with a new team and new fan base

    • Sean McLellan

"He had the natural skill, but from the beginning lacked the drive that could have made him into an all star."

He was an all-star you goof, 3 times. gtfo outta here with that shit. 45 points in 49 playoff games in the last two post-seasons, 2 cups, 1st and 3rd in consecutive post-season scoring, 70 points this regular season, and was 19th in scoring league wide, those are star numbers. Get a clue.

Shut up, you half wit. Kessel was surrounded by a bunch of nobodies and backed by very mediocre goaltending. Expecting an introvert scoring winger to be the face of the team just shows how stupid Leafs management, fans and media were. They were all too stupid to realize you need a strong core led by a center and top defenseman and a top level goalie to get anywhere. And now Kessel's got 2 Cups as a big fuck you to "world class" Toronto. The Pens will be forever grateful. And wait till Matthews has a bad couple weeks. You and the rest of those Toronto clowns will be screaming for him to be traded. Rutherford will be happy to oblige - again.

That moment a person (Kessel) is part of a line (HBK line) that is the only reason a team wins the Cup (Pittsburgh) but a player who did absolutely nothing (Crosby) wins the MVP award.

Shows how biased the league is about Crosby, not the team in general, just Sidney Crosby alone. And if they're not biased about him, they're biased about Connor McDavid (and I'd know because I'm a Auston Matthews believer/Leafs fan.)

He's weak. He couldn't handle the spotlight or the pressure. He needed the comfort of hiding behind other stars in Pittsburgh. There are leaders who make there name and others who just follow in there wake. Which is Phil?

    • vual grimoire
      vual grimoire 2 months ago

Yeah, that's why he led Pens in playoff points last year while on the 3rd line. He was hiding behind Hagelin and Bonino. And this year he's third in playoff scoring, feeding Malkin some awesome setups. Maybe time to pull your head out of your ass and see the gleam of those 2 Cups.

    • Trevor R
      Trevor R 6 months ago

cowscrazy And then there are those who lead a Stanley Cup Champion team in scoring during the playoffs. (It was Phil). He's not weak, he's simply not a leader. Penguins don't win the 2016 cup if they don't have Kessel.

Kessel was never the problem in Toronto. You don't build a team around a scoring winger. Winning teams are built around elite, playmaking centers and defensemen. You need to have at least one of each. Chicago = Keith and Toews. LA = Kopitar and Muzzin (or Doughty although I believe Muzzin is better). Pitt = Crosby/Malkin and Letang.

    • scarycrazymann
      scarycrazymann Month ago

Agreed. It was just unfortunately bad timing for Toronto with Kessel and a lot of people harped on it because of the draft picks that ended up being Seguin and Hamilton but in the end he still produced and was a great player here in Toronto and the fans loved him and he loved playing here and the city. He just hated how the media was and can't blame the guy. Tough market to be playing hockey in, but best of both worlds. He won a cup and Toronto is on its way to becoming a Dynasty in 4-5 more years.

    • vual grimoire
      vual grimoire 2 months ago

Toronto has a long history of running quality players out of town. Their management, fans and media are such fucking idiots they always expected one guy to carry to the team and had no clue it takes a strong core and a top flight goalie. Countless players have left Toronto to go onto much better things with other teams.

    • vual grimoire
      vual grimoire 2 months ago

Wait till Matthews and Co. have a rough patch. Toronto's moronic hockey media will be demanding trades and Shanahan be fired. It's what always happens in stuck up wannabe "world class" Hogtown. None of the Toronto hockey media can even skate, let alone know anything about the game. I saw that Sid S. creep at city hall rink, falling on his fat ass while waddling around, 5 year-olds skating circles around him.

    • LEVELSABOVE
      LEVELSABOVE 6 months ago

Toronto never hated him though. Fans loved him, but Kessel was lazy on occasion and he got blamed for it being the best player on the team more often than not, he took a lot of the criticism which was unfortunate. The management didn't support him with players that could win. It was the media that loved to blow things out of proportion and we all know Kessel isn't a big camera guy nor does he like to talk about hockey in general. Kessel loved Toronto and the city, he didn't want a trade out, it was just time to move on and regroup and start over and to be honest it was the best of both worlds for both teams, Kessel happily got a cup and could easily be getting a 2nd one this year and Toronto is on the right track to being a serious contender and one if not the best team in the league in the next 5years and that's finally nice to see.

  • David McCalla
    David McCalla Year ago +21

As a die Leafs fan I'm so proud of this guy, so happy he won the cup. He was my favorite player on Toronto but I'm glad we traded him away. Anyways the trade worked out for both teams since the Pens won the cup and the Leafs got Auston Matthews. Great video man. Still miss ya Phil.

    • LEVELSABOVE
      LEVELSABOVE 6 months ago

Leafs will be the best team in the entire NHL in probably 5 years. Once they shore up the blue line and still develop some of the talent they have in the prospect pool and add on to Matthews,Marner,Nylander  and those guys get a year or two under there belt, this team will be a top contender in a couple years. They're already good, just lack some experience and they aren't great defensively. Leafs have probably blown 10-12 games this year when leading the third by a goal or two. They could be sitting much further up in the standings, but in reality they are probably where they deserve to be dogging it out in the final 25-30 games to get into the playoffs and I think they will do it. The teams got so much speed and skill, a great coach, best management in hockey and Lou will definitely work his magic in the next year or two to bring in the right guys on the back end to make this team a powerhouse, that being said though it's still hard to win a cup regardless of how good you are. Look at Washington, arguably had the deepest team last year to take it all and even so this year but isn't an easy thing to do. I miss Kessel too and I'm happy for him, the pure emotion in him and the happiness in winning the cup was a nice thing to see. He was put into the right place, a supporting roll behind 2 super stars in Malkin and Crosby, less media etc. But Kessel didn't want out of Toronto he loved Toronto and the city, could realistically see Kessel residing in Toronto after his career with the way he talked about Toronto but was just the wrong timing and the media in general are just morons.

+David McCalla Babcocks your guy, and you have the right to defend him. But I'm just pointing out the facts of his days in Detroit. He Had Datsuyk Zetterberg, Lidstom, Holstrom, Rafalski, Kronwall, Franzen, Cleary, M Sammeulson, Helm, Hudler, Filpula, McCarthy, Osgood, etc, etc, etc. Thats some damn good work by Holland to put a pretty good core of players to have on the ice. Just saying. If I was a Detroit fan, I would have expected some more cup runs, with that team. I would never say coach Q is overrated. His teams have won 3 cups in 6 years. And your right. It's the hardest championship to win. We'll just agree to disagree about Babcock. If he proves me wrong, then that would be great for the Leaf fans, and it would also be great for the rest of the league. I have no problem with that. I want the salary cap to work for everyone in the league, because it makes the league more competitive, and that much more exciting to watch! Can't wait for October! Drop the puck already!!!!

    • David McCalla
      David McCalla 11 months ago

+Dennis Malesky No Ken Holland didn't do all the heavy lifting in Detroit, Babcock did alot of work they're too. Look at the past few seasons in Detroit, the reason why they made the playoffs was because of Babcock especially in 2014 when they had a AHL team both Datsyuk and Zetterberg missed alot of games that year. So what if he has won 1 Stanley Cup, winning the cup is hard as hell in the cup era. Babcock is a great coach that's why they pick him for Team Canada in the Olympics and in the world cup, yeah those rosters are stacked but the Babcock is a very big part of that team winning gold. I don't get it when people say he is overrated because than Coach Q in Chicago is overrated too with plsyers like Keith, Kane, Toews etc Same with Darrly Sutter in LA with Kopitar, Doughty, Carter, Muzzin etc. The Leafs this past season we're a much better puck possession team in recent years. They're corsi numbers went way and the team wasn't giving up 40 plus shots a night like we would with Carlyle. The Leafs played great this past season we just had a shit roster. Plus Babcock did wonders for players like Gardiner, Kadri, Rielly and JVR. Babcock will do great this up and coming season too with Matthews, Nylander and Marner. He is a great coach and is doing wonders for the Leafs. As a I said before the Leafs won't be a joke no more they will be a powerhouse team in the next 5 years.

    • Djm Pgh
      Djm Pgh 11 months ago

+David McCalla I hope for Toronto's sake, you're right. I've never drank the Kool aid the rest of the hockey fan world drank served by Mike Babcock. Ken Holland did all the heavy lifting in Detroit. Babcock inherited a machine for a team, that only produced one cup, while he coached. And when that machines older parts started falling off, he bolted to the highest bidder. His coaching victories in the olympics, shouldn't count for anything, because any bantam level coach, could have won with those teams. Hope your right though, because the league would be so much better, if every team in it was competitive.

    • David McCalla
      David McCalla Year ago

+Raymond Nesbitt No he won't. The Leafs are a changed team, haven't you noticed. We have arguably the best coach in the game, smart management group, great scouting Mark Hunter is a wizard, and a too 3 prospect pool in the league. Don't be surprised if the Leafs are a powerhouse team in the future. They are finally doing things right and the future is bright here.

With all the attention taken off of him and being able to play with a world class all star like Crosby, it's easy to see how someone with his talent could finally flourish. He is meant to play with other highly skilled players, not lead a whole team of misfits to the promised land. He even says it himself, he's never changed his game or his role in the locker room. He's an awkward AF dude who just loves to play hockey. If he isn't having fun, he's not going to produce.
