For longer stays find a local grocery shop and pharmacy close to where you stay or pack dry easy fix foods like ramen and oatmeal especially if you don't stay at a hotel. I did this for my study abroad in Germany and it was great for those late night meals or indoor study sessions past 8 pm when restaurants close to me were closed. Use a map, that's how I got around Paris for a day with no trains. its cheaper to walk if you can read a map really well and you see everything better along the way to and from your hotel. if your hotel has free buffet breakfast take a fruit or something to go to get the most out of it, you don't want to be starving when the tour bus drops you off and overspend because you were too hungry to think. have a spending budget before you go but give yourself wiggle room, especially if using ATM's, its not fun going home with extra euro's and $3 in your acct

Does anyone have tips on how to deal with money when traveling for a month or more? Cards can incur fees, but exchanging a huge amount of cash seems risky especially if you have to carry it around .... also some cards don't work at foreign atms

Wake! Lots of great tips! Although I don't think you do NOT have to have wi-fi in every resturant. A bit overkill unless u need to check Facebook when you sit in an exiting new place.
And the best way to pay is with your card directly if possible since your banks exchange rate is usually cheaper than an atm:s rate.
    Thank you

Laundry? I've never had such a problem. Do you really need a washing machine to wash your underwear? Really? As for the rest of the clothes, I don't wash them after one use (unless there is a stain or something like that) and I never bring just 1 piece so... no laundry problems.
Wi-fi? You don't need it everywhere you go, unless you are planning to spend time in your phone instead of talking to your travel companions. To have it in your hotel is essential (but if you have a data plan, you are good without it). You really don't need internet this much.

So I guess I already made one of these mistakes haha, but I didn't have too much of a choice. My layover before I go to Dublin is less than an hour and a half. I'm starting in Arkansas, then going to Chicago, then Dublin. You talked about customs, but don't I go through customs once I get to Ireland? What will happen once I land in Chicago? Thanks!

Keep underwear in you hand luggage/carry on in case your case gets lost then you have back up undies, also if it's big enough put some clothes in. Another tip is if your travelling with other people spread you luggage across eachother's cases that way if one of the gets lost you still have clothes

Tip #1 Don't use ATM in a foreign country. There is a crazy fee to use it. And your bank will charge you for it like 2% and more or $10...Exchange it in advance at a good rate and pay with the card at shops if you can. There is usually no fee when you pay with your card. Just don't you ATMs please!

  • jordy gaz
    jordy gaz 26 days ago

my rule of thumb for packing, if you dont use it already every day, dont pack it! I took socks that i never once wore, and a bunch of other crap because i thought i may need it but never did at all and the few things i didn't take which i thought i wouldn't want to be carrying around ended up being things i had to buy on the road such as face scrubs and stuff. So my thing is, if you dont already use it every day, don't bring it.

If I was ever forced to travel somewhere I wouldn't bring my iPhone, I'd get some super cheap phone so if it gets stolen I won't lose out. I'd also try to limit my stay to the amount of clothes I could comfortably carry so I wouldn't have to worry about laundry. Finally, I would NEVER go out to socialize. Too risky.

    ATM = BIG fee.

    • vangrails
      vangrails 28 days ago

ATMs are most of the times cheaper than exchanging money. The amount of fees also depend on your debit or credit card. An exchange office needed to be manned all the time so they are labour intensive,, ATMs only need to be refilled from time to time, therefore I think that ATMs are most of the time cheaper.

also, so you would NOT GO to a wonderful restaurant say run by a family, or a beautiful air b n b with local people....because they don't have wifi? You can't go for a few hours? Like you would pass up on a wonderful REAL experience.....because they did not have wifi? You can't experience something without sharing or being connected? This is insanity and not travel.

laundry in the sink. Hello? you stay at cheap places, and take some special soap to clean in the sink. Also take clothing that can dry overnight or in 24 hours. There is underwear that you can purchase that dries overnight....rinse in the sink, hang somewhere and voila, fresh undies every morning. But this small packets of laundry soap are wonderful....dry soap. buy them. Also why waste an afternoon at a laundramat?

My kitty cat is actually my travel partner. But I do have some suggestions. 1. Craigslist. I know it has a bad reputation, but just be careful and I think you'll be fine. Check their ride sharing. 2. Post on your facebook. You might have a friend that would love to go with you and you just don't realize. 3. Meetup.com is a website where like minded people can find each other. That's always a good place to find friends. Have a great time :)
