Ricky made a few points he talked about how things began, but science cannot explain why.
In Islam we do not believe that quran is the only revelation rather quran says scriptures were given to Jesus Moses David, in all approximately 124000 messengers were sent throughout the globe with the same message worship one God alone. Talk about science vs scripture which one can be better reproduced. He is ignorant of the fact quran is memorized by millions of Muslims, it won't take more than a day to reproduce it.

How is saying "if you destroy all religious books and everything related to the religion then it won't come back up again the same way like science does" a refutation??

That's just common sense and you ultimately have said nothing. Colbert could have simply responded by saying that if all traces of Ricky gervais has been destroyed then no one would ever have known he has existed. But that doesn't mean Ricky gervais never existed.

Ultimately Ricky gervais said nothing with his comment.

Man I didn't realize how angry people are until I started reading the comments. No matter which side you believe why put down anyone. It is everyone's choice to believe in what they want to believe in. Lets stop all the hate and anger and let people believe what they want to believe. As long as they are not hurting anyone else through there beliefs. If you are a Christian then just pray for those people but we cannot force any beliefs on anyone and nor should we. Lets stop the hate.

The source of disconnect here is the difference between feeling closer to the world than to God, and feeling closer to God than to the world. There's a lot to be said on both sides, yet the end of it is that there aren't two sides, there's just one. Humility is akin to piety; Ricky is humble in his disbelief. That's why you don't see a difference in heart between these two.

This may be the first time in all of recorded American television that someone is called an atheist to a mixed audience (they're not there to see a debate on theism) and received an applause for it. Progress.

  • Tim Leonard
    Tim Leonard 7 days ago

How can people who are so intelligent be so blind? Because as children, the same people they implicitly trusted to guide them not to hurt themselves with fire, sharp objects etc. also told them that there was a god who loved them and they would go to heaven if they loved them back and if they did not love this invisible person back, then they would go to hell and burn in torment forever. Looking at this objectively, this sounds abusive. This is brainwashing and indoctrination.

  • Goodness Gracious

I have some genuine questions for the atheists, and I'm not trying to stir you all up. Just curious:
What do you think about the idea of God creating science, reason, and logic?
Have you ever briefly entertained the thought "What if I'm wrong?"
Have any of you been genuinely close to death? What feelings came up at the time?

Not really interested in immature replies. Just having a conversation.

  • LeilaniHapa
    LeilaniHapa 7 days ago

Very respectful, both of them. Each person presented their argument and actually LISTENED to the other half of the conversation. If Christians would stop using the argument "well I'm right and you're wrong" and were less condescending of other belief systems, they wouldn't have such a bad reputation. But to be fair, I feel like Stephen didn't get a chance to actually argue his point, there wasn't enough time on the show for both of them to present an in-depth argument. Would have loved to see more.

I think Ricky Gervais made the best statement ever by saying that if you would destroy all the science books now, that by a few centuries they would all be back. Because you can test the results and it would lead to the same, while if you would wipe out all the bibles and religious books. They would be gone forever.

    • dogen
      dogen 2 days ago

Saying that all religious books would never be recreated is a circular argument. In order to say that, you are assuming that they were untrue and not inspired by god in the first place. It's simply a very poor argument.

His argument that science will still be rediscovered if all records were destroyed is also not a good one. Let’s take for example Martin Luther King Jr. If we destroyed all records of him, all people who have knowledge of him, his grave, anything involving him, people would not be able to re-discover who he is. That doesn’t mean he didn’t exist. Same thing with religion. Christ was crucified once in the past. It’s not like everyday Jesus physically gets crucified. So no, unless God reveals Himself again, people would not be able to rediscover religion. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not true. The reason science can be rediscovered is because it continues to occur. When I drop a pen, it falls. It’s not like it only falls once and then ceases to fall if I drop it again. It always falls, every single time I drop the pen. So yes, it could be rediscovered because it continues to happen. However, the historical parts of Christianity do not happen again on a daily basis, so how would they be rediscovered? Just like regular History does not happen again on a daily basis, so they would also not be able to be re-discovered if all records were destroyed? However, that doesn’t mean History is false because it doesn’t happen exactly the same way again. Just because people don’t know about something, doesn’t mean it’s not true. And from a Christian standpoint, I would actually argue that people could re-discover Christianity if all records were destroyed. Through miracles (even modern-day ones), which have already happened in the name of Christ already. If a miracle were to occur after all religious records were destroyed, a person would know there is a God, even though they might not know the story behind the miracle (i.e. Crucifixion, Resurrection, etc.).

The argument that Christians are atheists except for one God is not a good one. That’s like calling a married person single, except for with one person. That doesn’t make sense; the person is not single and a Christian (or anyone of any other religion) is not an atheist.

Colbert silences his audience from applauding Ricky Gervais saying he's an atheist. I have no desire to run down anyone who believes in God(s). It's a personal choice and beliefs vary widely. But Colbert is letting his ego oppress others by shushing the applause for his guest's opinion. How is Colbert's censorship different than any other? Freedom of religion includes the freedom to not have one.

Churches in numerous countries remain exempt from taxes, which I find to be utter bullshit. There's just too many factors for atheists to stay quiet.

Sooo how does science disprove God?? People separate the two by how would that make since for God to create a universe that doesn't "make sense" and "flow" it's natural course. Like time, gravity, light, absense of light, matter, All coming together.where is your evidence? Where in "science" does it show that God is disproven? Do YOU know the origins of the earth? But you probably do know since you love "science" that "science" also says that this world is slowly passing away and burning up and one day will not be here. Every scientist and there grandmother says this world will have an end. So you are saying there is no beginning?? But it is easier for you to believe the earth came from absolutely nothing than from "something" and atheist safe answer is there default of If God is real prove it. Prove it?? So you want God to show up in front of your face when you snap your fingers?? Then again you are probably angry at God for the way the world is more than disbelief, because life isn't what you want it to be. Open your eyes man and see that you won't be walking on this earth one day soon. Science also says there is one truth by logic and reason, not multiple truths, but one. Have a good day.

"when i first began my studies, mountains where mountains and rivers were rivers, after some years i began to realise that both are the same, now that i have studied for a very long time, i finally see that mountains are mountains and rivers are rivers."

a rather butchered translation of an old zen story. as Bodhidharma once said; "infinite vastness, nothing holy", nothing is true of everything, something can only ever be true under a given set of parameters, extend the parameters and it will no longer be true. the ignorant theist when educated will often become an atheist, the atheist when educated further often feels a draw to the mystical and unfortunately this is often expressed as religion, go yet further again and you'll reach higher forms of atheism ad infinitum. 2 sides of the same coin.

while i'm pretty convinced that stephen does indeed believe in the christianity god, there is always the small voice in cynical me saying that he can't afford to admit being atheist if he were, for the sake of his viewership or job security.

would his public be offended and stop watching him if he did come out as non believer? Is it worth to risk it, for the sake of transparency. When in the united states there is so much prejudice and discrimination against atheist, is it risky for a public figure whose job depends on being liked to go against mainstream train of thoughts.

A lot of people have expressed similar views about truth to me. I think you are mistaken. Some might say, "it would be true that the earth is spherical and not flat, even if there were no minds there to observe it", but a mind is making that statement and it is projecting itself into a past where there were no minds. It is true [now] that if you existed back then, you would describe the earth correctly as spherical and erroneously as flat. But nobody was around to chop up the enormously complex process we call universe into tiny mental pieces (like earth or moon) and make statements about them that may or may not be describing these pieces correctly. At a time without minds, no proposition about the form of the earth taken from human symbolic language, based on biological and cultural evolution, would exist. There would be no truth or falsehood, imho.

I also disagree that scientific evidence for God would destroy freedom of choice. I would still be able to distinguish between making choices based on wants and being subject to external force. I would still be able to disagree with divine morality if I thought it irrational and cruel. However, if the Great Maker is not a tyrant he/she would allow dissent. If he/she intended to torture anyone who didn't subscribe to a particular religion for all eternity then that certainly would impact my experienced freedom of choice, but that isn't the fault of the scientific evidence, rather than the personality of the creator.

    • Raducu Slav
      Raducu Slav 27 days ago

I think truth is independent from our minds. There is no scientific evidence for God because the smallest scientific evidence would crush our free will. Maybe God showing himself is the equivalent of a scientist trying to create a sentient being but settling for a robot. Scientists will never be able to create artificial intelligence, you know why ? Because they can't put it alone in the universe to allow it to choose between good and evil, to see if it can be trusted or not.

My point in writing this was that Stephen asks Ricky why there is something rather than nothing. This is supposed to be a proof of God. But claiming God doesn't solve the problem since one may just as easily ask why there is God instead of just nothing. Whether or not truth has always existed depends on whether or not minds have always existed, since minds express propositions about experiential reality that may or may not be true.

it's not a matter of us believing that the Universe was really small before it exploded, it's the matter that it works. You see the difference between let's say between God and the Big Bang is that science gladly states that it's a theory, a very accepted and respected one but a theory nonetheless which is opened for improvements or even opened to be disproved, whilst religion acts as if there's no reason to question God's existence. Can we say that the big bang actually happened? Well I wasn't there was I? But there's mathematical proof and physicists do a better job at explaining this than I do, but there is a reason to why people think such thing happened and the reason is based on observations. So, with all due respect, let's not mix the faith in God with the theory of the Big Bang.

The dominant religions of the day are Corrupt and Communist
    1. Corrupt because we teach our kids to earn everything in life, there are no free lunches. You want something you have to earn it!
But that is not what religions preach - Heaven cannot be earned. The only way in is to join the "right" religion, pray to the "right" God
That's like doing business in a corrupt country where the quality of your product doesn't matter, all that matters is greasing the right palms, polishing the right shoes
Like working for a sleazy boss who demands favors for promotions - all your hard work doesn't matter
Not just corrupt but it is disgusting
    2. Communist because the terminology is the same!
In a Communist, Dictator country like say North Korea we hear the citizens say, "Dear Loving leader will take care of us. He is leading us to a great future. Do not listen to outsiders or others, they are all evil and tell lies."
You hear religions saying similar things - imploring you not to read any other books, claiming all other religions are evil, only their religion will deliver the goods etc
Promise of goodies followed by threats if you don't agree
Would make any Communist or Dictator proud!
Sad to say that i belong to this human race where the dominant religions have no class or morals

Atheism is a belief system, believe it or not. it's not an organized belief system like most religions are. But atheism is the belief that there is no Divine beings or deities that watch over this world, that there is nothing else after this life. That is a belief.

And science is not always proving things. Science is very inconsistent. Years ago, science told us that milk was incredibly good for you and was one of the best things to drink. Then, more recently, milk was said to be a factor in autism in children. Then that was dismissed. All because of the inaccuracies of science.

Jesus Christ was the original revolutionary. He was the first to unite the lower class people and slaves, and show them that they as a whole were more powerful together than their high lord rulers at the time. The high lords/masters saw this and knew there positions of power and wealth were in jeopardy, not to mention their lives. So they killed Jesus in a fashionable way and made up the story of his sacrifice and that he was the son of god to justify what they did, and religion became the new way of keeping the mass population under control.
    That's my theory.
Now, tell me that doesn't make more sense and seem more logical then the BS the Bible tells you....

Well done Ricky. As usual Stephen asked a non scientist to explain science. Ricky was describing peer reviewed science. Just because he did not know the details does not prove a god.

has anyone really not thought stephen purposely chose ignorance like that to represent what many average people would say as an 'arguement" he asked at the beginning "would you like to debate?" and at the end said "thats good thats really good" with a smile.

He backed out of that debate very quickly when he realised Ricky destroyed him... makes a joke about Satan... equivalent of sticking his fingers in his ears and going lalalalala

But funnily enough, it takes a great deal of faith to say I don't need faith. It is actually maybe the purest expression of faith

Yes, even the atheist entertainer admits there's a devil at the end. Of course there's a devil: he and his demons are imposing their sick, demented ideas on society via people like this. They want to boil faith down to the Christian "having feelings" and the athiest, at first saying they don't know, then pater changing their stance to be backed by "science". Last I checked, Gervais is not a scientist. But if you're foolhardy enough to believe the miriad of "natural processes" came into existence by themselves, sustain themselves and that there is ultimately no purpose to life YOU ARE WRONG. And athiesm is a total con from satan. It's a way to get people to waste their time and resources to believe and promote anything with some slight margin of what almost seems like logic to be believable to people who either do not care or do not know better. And the punishment for this is extraordinarily severe! You will condemn yourself, in a permanent way to a place of unimaginable torment, away from your ignorant friends, your drugs, and your hedonistic lifestyle. It's not a rock concert. And having read this, you now know full well the choice that lies ahead of you, and you better get serious about it now. In Jesus' own words:
“Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭24:44‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

I was brought up catholic (my mother was a staunch catholic). When I was around 12, My mates were walking in to the church to get 'confirmed'.. I pulled out of the line and walked back to the car where my father was waiting, . I told him I didn't believe in it all,,expecting to get a hiding ... and to my surprise he was quite pleased. I thought he was quite religious because my mother told me the reason he was out every night was that he was at church,,, turned out that he was at the pub

Funny how everyone including atheists use Jesus's Name in vain all over this world. Just proves Who He is. Nobody swears by evolution, or natural selection, Darwin, Allah, Buddah etc. etc. They swear by Jesus because it breaks one of the Commandments......."Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain."
