Working in nursing for many years and I can tell you, with complete certainty, that ER nonsense is a joke. We only have to stabilize a patient. Patients that can't be treated and leave the same day and who also have no insurance are labeled self care and it's common practice for doctors to discharge as quickly as possible.
The second problem with the "no insurance, go to the ER" is that we are there for EMERGENCIES! Clogging up an ER with patients that don't need to be there hurts everyone. Nurses and doctors, we struggle to keep up, patients are waiting for hours and hours. Plus, in an ER we can only treat you so much. Gunshot wound, broken leg, etc. come to the ER. Chemo treatments, lab work, prescriptions, I can't help you in the ER.
This isn't rocket science. Why can't Republicans get this through their heads already. Obamacare wasn't perfect by any means. But we should work on fixing it together with the end goal of single payer.

So, "People die from lack of coverage" gets shifted to "People go bankrupt from lack of coverage" then transforms into "People with long term or terminal illnesses die more often when they lack of coverage". Isn't it tiring pushing the goalpost all that way instead of just acknowledging "People die from lack of coverage" is an unreasonable statement?

I didn't have health insurance last year and I began to have backaches. I ignored them and just put hot towels on it. But the pain persisted for 2 weeks. Finally, I couldn't walk up straight and my urine was really cloudy and dark, I was thirsty all the time too despite drinking alot of water. By the 15th day I had a fever of 104 F so my bf took me to the ER despite me telling him I didn't want to go because I didn't have insurance. I later found out I had a kidney infection from not going to the doctor in the first place. They said if I had waited a little longer I would have died from sepsis. When they asked me why I hadn't come in sooner because they couldn't believe I went so long with the pain, I told them I didn't have health insurance because I was paying for college instead. Fuck the GOP man...

I've known people that seem to think you can "just go to the emergency room" if you don't have insurance. As someone who for most of my life got all of my health care from the emergency room I know that they have no idea what that is like at all.

    1. It's not free. They will bill you and send bill collectors after you. It is very expensive. When I had my appendix out over a decade ago the bills added up to $25k.
    2. It's really only for things that can be fixed in 1 visit. They usually tell you to follow up with your own doctor. They may have helped me with my appendix but when I had cancer if I hadn't been able to get Medicaid the emergency room wasn't going to give me non emergency surgery and chemo and radiation. I didn't even get diagnosed there. I got diagnosed at Planned Parenthood which the republicans hate too.
    3. Having the emergency room as your primary medical care discourages preventative health care and makes you feel like you should only be going to the doctor if you are in a lot of pain or think you might be dying.

A glorious time for America has the horror of Obamacare is finally ending thanks to President Trump. Now we will all soon be able to enjoy a wonderful and new healthcare plan (depending on what the Senate does) to make our lives better and more prosperous. People in this country some anyway have gotten to use to enjoying their preexisting conditions being covered just like all of the rest of their entitlements because liberals simply don't want or lift a finger to try and improve their lives or anybody else's for that matter because in their eyes the world America and its hard working taxpayers like me are their money tree to drain off and mistreat very badly. And yes this bill may end up leaving more uninsured by cutting Medicaid (welfare for poor in urban cities that are literally ghetto, thieves, and murdering scum that are simply not very nice to me by destroying and burning the streets and people) by billions of dollars but will drastically improve the lives of the vast majority of Americans by allowing them to have more choices in terms of providers, lower premiums and deductibles, and hopefully (depending on what the Senate does) allowing exchanges to cross state lines so the hard working American can enjoy all of the goodies available to the American people. This healthcare act will represent the hard working very nice American lovers (Republicans) and bring the fury and wrath of downright justice and karma upon the not very nice disgruntled minority (Democrats). You liberals should learn to be nicer and compassionate to me and them maybe I shall be the same to you in return.

_"Nobody dies because they don't have access to health care."_

Translation: 'I don't give a shit about your lives.'

His argument is so ridiculous, so lazy, and nonchalant, it reveals his and his colleagues' true ideology. They may not _want_ people to die, but they don't _care_ if people die.

We just need health industry reform period. Doctor's shouldn't be salesmen/drug dealers, men shouldn't tell women what to do with their bodies, and a litany of other topics. Also, mental health treatment is a HUGE issue world wide let alone here in the US. Brains can become ill just like other organs obviously. I don't know why we treat mind upkeep like it's optional. "Oh, your mom just passed away?.. work getting to you?.. Call this random stranger/hotline and WALK IT OFF!" 🤔

  • asherael
    asherael 3 months ago +2

Nobody dies of a gunshot wound, or a car accident because they don't have healthcare. You get emergency treatment so they can bill you for everything you got for the rest of your life. They like it that way so they can take everything you have. BUT people are denied life extending, life prolonging, and quality of life treatments because they can't pay ALL the TIME.

Unless healthcare is made a right it will remain a luxury.

Who ends up paying for uninsured ER visits? The local hospital does, who pays for that? The local communities, this is socialism in its purest form, and all of this supposedly shunned by Conservatives. My wife is a Nurse, she sees patients dying from lack of insurance all the time. With unlimited access to capital a patient can get the very best specialist doctors, the best care with much better outcomes than a patient who must rely on going to the ER with cancer, car crash injuries, or heart attack troubles.

But sometimes it feels like that's the only way it's going to get better.
The second amendment was partially intended for when our own government gets out of hand and this kind of legislation can potentially kill a great number of citizens.

Whether from losing a child or a spouse, a family member or friend, eventually someone's going to snap. It'd be hard to feel bad for the politicians that could potentially be killed for voting American's to death. It would even be hard to feel bad for any of those militarized police who choose to defend the scum of our nation.

Like your statement, this is in no way a threat, just an observation.

As citizens of the United States, we all need to stop dividing apart because of political parties. Regardless if you supported GOPs or Liberals, we are still Americans under one roof. We should never let Political Parties divide us just because of a group of wealthy individuals who's using this opportunity to benefit themselves.

America is an ideal. America is NOT its Government. It is not held together by Bureaucrats and Politicians. We should love and support this nation, not the people who is put in charge. We are not to serve the government, the government is supposed to serve us.

Let's be clear, people that go to the ER without insurance will get a bill that they can't pay, and the hospital will eventually get paid for that bill by both increased insurance rates and government funding. Both of which costs everyone in the end. So not only is their financial lives destroyed, they will be hounded by debt collectors for years or decades, their family will lose everything, leans on assets,etc...then the rest of society still pays for it, albeit it at an obscene rate compared to any single-payer system. How anyone could call this system efficient or effective is insane. Oh, and people are dying because of it also. As if that wasn't bad enough!

  • Royal Ace
Royal Ace 3 months ago +1

Sure "Nobody Dies" due to lack of Health care... Yeah, leave it to Politicians to make the decisions for people's health and welfare. The fact that he said "Nobody dies because they don't have access to healthcare" just confirmed to everyone that politicians should never be allow to debate on people's healthcare.

Medical professionals with integrity, ethics, and morals should be allow to overlook our nation's healthcare instead of a bunch of ignorant, greedy, self-serving, & unconscionable people who uses the Political Party platform and the U.S. Government to serve themselves.

The most distasteful part is Tom Price, who is a medical professional, is aiming to benefit and profit from this at the cost of Americans health and well beings. The Hippocratic Oath does not apply to him at all. To see a physician who rather benefit and profit at the cost of millions of Americans health and lives is sickening.

People need to forget about Political Parties and who they support. This entire Administration and all the Republican officials associated with it, are not Conservatives. They are wealthy people who uses the political platform and the Government to serve themselves and benefit from it.

Republicans are playing a word game that appears to be going over everyone's head -- including the headline writer of this piece: Republicans switch the word "affordable" out for "accessible."

"Nobody dies for lack of access to health care" is technically correct..."Nobody dies for lack of affordable health care" is provably false -- IT IS CALLED THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT FOR A REASON.

    • Don Brown
      Don Brown 3 months ago

This is why single payer -- the health care system Australia and Canada have that Trump recently praised -- is preferable. It also means taxing the hell out of people that can afford it.

I mean no, they need poor people to profit. Ultimately the poor are workers and consumers, and they still need those. They aren't thinking long term- they want to force the poor to live on junk food and then leave them to die when they get heart disease. Their goal is to exploit these things as much as possible while they're in office and their corporate friends are in their respective positions, and as soon as they can retire, they don't care if the system collapses behind them. It doesn't matter; their loyalty is to themselves only, at the end of the day. They are as Cartesian as they come.

There are a few more than the Rothschild and Warren Buffet.
I'm talking about those who are above the law because they made sure the laws don't apply to them.
In the richest country of the world exist the largest inequality of income and of death due to lack (food, shelter, health). Specially for a country created specifically because of taxation without representation...
For the vast majority, this is no longer the land of the free, because the land is no longer theirs, and they're not free because they have to answer to those who now own it.
Freedom and the American dream is only an ideology that has gotten lost in the same medieval system of feudalism, which is not medieval as it is alive and well.

If you are only speaking about the Rothschilds and Warren Buffet, then yes I agree that loop holes should be eliminated. But raising taxes on the top 20% - 2% hurts small and medium business owners while not effecting the 1% at all. We need to lower taxes and close loop holes.

    • DashaAZ vln
      DashaAZ vln 3 months ago

The 20% of income earners does not mention the top of them all. The richest of them all pay no taxes, they made sure they don't have to. You know it.

I'll argue the "stealing" that happens at the top 1%, by taking advantage of laws passed by their 'buddies'.

They don't pay a percentage that is fair to their financial gain, not to mention the gains they hold in out of the country tax free havens created just for them, for which they don't feel is necessary to report.

Is fine to be rich. It's immoral to have more than plenty and allow the poor to suffer because "it's not their business".

    • Brian
      Brian 3 months ago
This article says 45% of Americans don't pay taxes (after deductions on April 15th) and top 20% of income earners pay 87% of all federal income.

In 2016 that estimate grew to 53% who pay less than $0 net taxes.

When preaching class warfare, it helps to use reality to support your claims.

    • DashaAZ vln
      DashaAZ vln 3 months ago

Class mobility until the late 70s was still possible. "Reaganomics" made sure that the classes remained split and the poor remained poor regardless of his "war on poverty" was the beginning of the end for those in worse financial position and made the rich the extremely privilege 1% we have now. The welfare system created made sure the poor couldn't leave poverty as any time a financial gain was made, even over $1 (US dollar) over what you received from welfare needed (still needs) to be returned to them; no wiggle room to get out.
I do believe it's possible to have a socialized healthcare if the rich paid a percentage of taxes just like the bottom twenty percent of taxpayers do, not their subsidies on wealth.
The US oligarchy created in the beginning of the 20th century to mimic royalty in Europe made sure they controlled the government to secure their futures. The hell with the poor, they're to do the work the children of the rich will never have to do.
The education system in the last 30 years (ending with no 'child left behind') turned a new kind of slavery in this country: the barely educated; not teaching civics and government to keep people from knowing their rights as citizens, push for sports to keep them busy and keeping the attention away from the matters of what happens behind the scenes, and learn how to use multiple choice just to give you a pretense of freedom has made the U.S. a third world country with a shiny facade.

Not everyone is born to go to college, but everyone should earn a livable wage if they work hard. That's no longer the case when CEO's earn tens of millions of dollars and their workers barely can sustain a family.

I'm not for communism by any stretch of the imagination.
I'm for fairness and the stop of greed.

newmanscott60: In America's inception, our idea of the best way to grow and prosper as a nation was to support corporations. Unfortunately, the corporations grew into these mammoth entities such as Pharmaceuticals, Big Oil, massively gigantic insurance companies and the bohemeth of banking. They don't like to share their wealth with the actual builders of this fine country. The people...the workers and payer of income tax. Now, the 1/2 percent of the population OWNS 90% of the wealth of this nation. The remaining 99 1/2 percent split up the other 10%.

axion for me with healthcare an er trip is no less than 100.00 at time of service. so you pay more for not paying then . so you have to decide whether or not it's worth going . on limited incomes a lot of people are working just for healthcare and food to survive. It's not a good system

    • axion
      axion 3 months ago

in my country it cost about 150 euro just to have a intern look at you in the ER

Victorseafog nothing is free when it comes to healthcare. unless your in some third world countries dying of starvation or something. It's bullshit also to charge American people the maximum and turn around and give it away outside of the United States for free. we definitely need regulation on pharmaceutical companies.

    • Victorseafog
      Victorseafog 3 months ago

Another vital point that is never, ever brought up is that you will be billed for using a ER. ER care is very expensive strep throat or a ear infection will set you back between 600 -850 bucks for a 5 minute visit.
Regardless if you have insurance or not you will be billed. Like any bill failure to pay will result in collections and possible law suit. It will be put on the credit history as a debt. Those marks on the credit history take years to fade away. if ever. This effects getting employment, loans, school, securing housing, etc. So there is a huge long term price to pay if you are forced to use a ER because of no other options.

It is bullshit to say that using the ER is "FREE" if you don't have health insurance, pure right wing mother fucking upper class corporate bullshit
