Autism is one of the most misunderstood conditions in society. I'm glad that Julia was brought to Sesame Street. I think this new muppet will really be great for the young generation of today to learn more about ASD and what to expect from someone who has it. Maybe it'll also help parents to be more aware of the condition and have a clearer understanding of it. Autism comes in different shapes and sizes, hence it being known as a spectrum disorder. So needless to say, the way Julia is depicted is not the same as others who are on the spectrum. However, her character could show audiences what it may be like befriending someone with autism, as well as what it can be like to have it yourself. :)

I really wish I saw this when I was a kid. I had an autistic friend and I loved her to bits but I didn't understand why she would flap her arms about and act a bit differently. The whole topic is still so taboo and this really warms my heart.

It is cool how despite the character being autistic, they don't constantly shove it down your throat and have her do normal things with other people, while the autism is just a subtle aspect of her personality. If more tv shows could do that, that would be pretty cool.

Something I HIGHLY appreciate about this is that Julia is a GIRL with Autism. Growing up as a girl on the spectrum born in 1995 (Aspergers) no one was able to figure out what I had until I was an adult! They labeled it "Auditory Processing Disorder" and just assumed I was just being a ditsy girl or shy but my mother knew something was troubling me and did everything she could to help me. We often see white boys with autism studied or talked about in documentaries (Life Animated, Aspergers are Us) and while I relate to a certain degree, I never see myself entirely. While I agree with the concept of "You meet one person with Autism, you've met one person with autism" and not everyone is the same, often girls will be misdiagnosed or it is assumed girls are rarer when it comes to disabilities. That is NOT the case at all, so thank you for Julia! You have no idea how much I would have appreciated this as a little girl, I see similarities already <3

    • Stephie2007
      Stephie2007 2 months ago

GeminiJoule I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome in 1993 just months shy of my fourth birthday. I was also born with hydrocephalus so I had a seizure disorder to boot. But thanks to early intervention such as occupational therapy and age appropriate brain games such as memory games and social skills classes and post-grad transition programs after my school years as well as some very good agencies that really know their stuff. I have been able to thrive in a so called "normal" world. I should mention that more inclusion and education based awareness like this is needed in the media. Otherwise, all you get is the fear based propaganda that makes autistic people look bad and makes parents (like my dad in some cases ) stay ignorant to the progress we are trying to make in our own lives. I don't have any kids of my own yet but I applaud Sesame Workshop for introducing us to little Julia.😀

GeminiJoule I was told I just have developmental delays and that's how I went through school, didn t get diagnosed as Autistic until I was 19. I agree Julia is great and even though I'm much older I still love her! It's great to see a female autistic character. when I first heard about the I assumed it was going to be a boy as the are more commonly diagnosed.

Yeah Julia is cool but I hope she only appears in one episode because I have a feeling the other Muppets like Cookie Monster Telly Grover or Ernie and Bert might make her uncomfortable.

    • TherealRNO
      TherealRNO 4 months ago

Plus, Snuffy's known for his deadpan, low self esteem-style of speaking. In fact, his known catchphrase is when he's upset, "Oh, dear."

    • marie lorde
      marie lorde 4 months ago

Justin Amos I don't think snuffy would be on that list as he has a very low and quiet voice

    • TherealRNO
      TherealRNO 4 months ago

Telly could actually relate to her, because he has panic attacks when scared and nervous, whereas Julia's autism covers a variety of emotions and gestures.

    • Justin Amos

The Count and Snuffy also counts as a loud active muppets right?

    • BugPope
      BugPope 4 months ago

But this is a good point, I don't think we'll see her in a lot of scenes with loud, active muppets like Cookie Monster or Grover. Although I think Telly is sensitive enough to understand her.

No, but my point is, true Muppets fans don't try to ruin the Muppeteers' careers and the perception of the beloved Muppet characters like a certain troll is doing on these videos (appropriately named #Are You Sick of the BS Yet?).
