Food regulations in the US are trash, they let everything in. It's not just snackfoods either but everyday foods like milk and bread as was shown in the video, no wonder Americans are so unhealthy and ill.

this was a disappointing waste of time!, why not do real banned foods, for example...haggis is banned in some countries including the US as it contains lungs and other offal. this would have stopped what sounds like a really good video to effectively be some serious click bait and false advertising. i mean sheet the milk is not banned, so at least give them the cancer inducing meat, better still stick them with the gear haha!

  • sacricolist
    sacricolist 14 days ago

It would have been pretty cool if they explained why these additives are banned, instead of just listing them. However, since Buzzfeed didn't do this I shall.

    1. Synthetic Astaxanthin (banned in Australia and New Zeeland): Natural Astaxanthin is in the plankton that most red-colored fish eat. It is what makes them red. Synthetic is used in farm raised salmon because without they have gray flesh and most consumers find that to be icky. What I find to be icky is that synthetic astaxanthin is ultimately made out of petroleum. The same stuff that plastics and engine fuels are made from.

    2. Yellow #6/Sunset Yellow FCF (banned in Norway, Finland, and Sweden): Sunset Yellow is used in food, cosmetic, and drugs. Usually candy, packaged desserts, snacks, sauces, and canned fruit. It isn't only in yellow colored foods, it can also be in caramel and chocolate. WHO and FAO guidelines say it is safe to take in up to 4mg/kg of this additive daily, but it is difficult to know how much you are consuming because it is used in so many food products. It's been claimed that Sunset Yellow causes ADHD-like behavior in children and food intolerance (similar to allergic reactions). This color is derived from another petrochemical called Sudan 1. Sudan 1 is a level 3 carcinogen.

    3. rBGH/Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone/Posilac (banned in Australia, New Zeeland, Japan, Israel, Canada and the EU): Natural bovine somatotropin is a peptide hormone produced by a cow's pituitary glands. It's used in regulating metabolic processes. Dairy farmers use a synthetic version, patented by Monsanto, to increase the milk yield in lactating cows. It is cloned into E. coli, broken up and separated, purified, and then injected into cattle. Some studies found that rBGH increases a cow's risk of mastitis (potentially fatal mammary gland infection), a 40% reduction in fertility, and a 55% increased risk of developing lameness. It has also been said that rBGH might increase the risk factor for both breast and gastrointestinal cancer in humans.

    4. Potassium bromate (banned in EU, Brazil, Canada, Argentina, Nigeria, Peru, and South Korea): Potassium bromate is used to strengthen dough and allow higher rising. It's an oxidizing agent, and if used properly it is supposed to be completely used up while the bread bakes. If too much is added, or the bread isn't baked long enough, some will remain. Despite not being banned in the USA, the FDA has urged bakers to voluntarily stop using it, and in California, a warning label is required on products using this additive. It has been shown to cause cancer.

Why aren't these things banned in the US? The most simplistic reason is that corporations are making a lot of money off of these additives.

Half of the comments are "I ship Evan and Kelsey" that is very disrespectful to Evans girlfriend Claire. Please respect their relationship, and the reason Evan and Kelsey are together is because they're good friends, but you still shouldn't ship them together. This is my opinion, because I respect their relationship. You can hate on me all you want I'm just trying to be respectful to Evan and Claire

Things that are Enriched is typically a synthetic folic acid. Lack of folic acid has some major birth defects in woman. However, there are some people (like myself) who have a mutated gene MTHFR C1298C whom cannot absorb folic acid, and actual builds up toxins in our body and affects how our body processes toxins. It's a good and bad thing. Good because is reduced lack of folic acid birth defects by 70% but the 40% of us with single or double mutation aren't so lucky. Basically I cannot eat rice, flour, grains of any sort in the US and many other countries. However when I go to Iceland you bet your bottom dollar I'm buying lots of these good and bribing them home so I can enjoy pasta again ๐Ÿ˜Š don't think folic is bad, it's good for those who can use it.

Ok the fact that they had to eat fake salmon is pissing me off. When one of them said that he didn't expect salmon to be grey, Tf man salmon is originally red/pink. The one salmon that they tend to sell in the lower 48 is pink salmon, while in Alaska you can fish for any salmon that you want. Silvers and kings are amazing fish and it just pissed me off that people try and farm fish in general...
