Build a DIY screen out of recycled parts for cheap

  • Added:  9 months ago
  • Laptop users generally have to just put up with having a single main screen, but thanks to upcycling we can build a DIY portable secondary screen for laptops using recycled parts to keep the cost as low as $25! It not only performs really well, but it looks incredibly unique - it's a piece of solid industrial tech this one! Once you use two screens you can never go back!

eBay affiliate link for the control board; add the model number as shown in the video:
    US buyers:
    UK buyers:

If your screen isn't listed, most sellers of the control boards allow you to contact them directly and they will program a control board for your specific screen at no extra cost. Just send them the model number and you should be good to go.

What If I find a control board with a usb port in it, you think I would be able to use it to connect and power the external monitor under the same port?

DIY Perks is there any way to repurpose tablet screen the same way? I am working on a project and if I can use tablet display instead of laptop LCD display it would be great!

really nice work !!! i was wondering if it is possible to make this with a 4k screen?

  • YEdwardP
    YEdwardP 13 hours ago

    Wonderful idea.

If I may just make a small suggestion though. I think that if such a monitor is designed to be truly portable, then the screen would need protection. To that end, I would add another thin but stiff board over the screen that would hinge (stiffly) over or under the screen and to the back in order to act as a stand. This would provide both stand functionality and screen protection functionality in one.

    DEV_GINZ 5 days ago

Do you have links for the step down board? Also, i am a bit confused by the way this is soldered. Why did you put in a female usb looking thing. I would this we would take the plug that goes INTO The control board and solder that on the OUT on the step down board. Then I take a USB cable soldered on the IN on the step down. Hopefully you see this and get back to me. thanks.

u can by airbar for ~79$ if u have 13", 14", or 15" inch screen. I did this DIY with my dead samsumng notebook (left the original casing tho, I broke the laptop in half) and I added the airbar, worked perfectly.
I must admit tho, it was a cool feature to add, but the touchscreen didn't rly help me much, just made me working much more elegant and cool
