  • Here is a Japan travel guide on some of the tourist traps in Tokyo and some places you could avoid in Tokyo. I hope the japan travel tips and advice gives you a heads up before travelling to Japan and makes your trip a smoother one! :)

    Places mentioned in order:

Option: Instead of paying to go up the tower, enjoy Tokyo Tower from the surroundings
    - Shiba Park (Shiba koen)
    - Zozoji Temple

or go up other places for free views of Tokyo
    - Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (in Shinjuku)
    - Carette Shiodome
    - Bunkyo Civic Center
    - Carrot Tower (in Sangenjaya)

Option: Check out the back streets, hidden paths and traditional places
    - Brahms Path
    - Harajuku Street (Back streets with vintage shops, second hand shops, hipster hangouts etc)
    - Tokyu Plaza Rooftop
    - Meiji Shrine
    - Yoyogi Park

Option: Look at sky tree from other view points and take a short 15 minute stroll to Asakusa
    - Solamachi 30th Floor
    - Asakusa

Option: Instead of paying the high table charge, check out local Japanese yokocho (back alleys filled with tiny bars and restaurants)
    - Shibuya Nombei Yokocho
    - Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho
    - Ebisu Yokocho
    - Sangenjaya Chitai Yokocho
    - Yurakucho Sanchoku Inshokugai

If you don't like crowds and lines, then Tokyo and Japan in general is not for you. I personally like it because I get to people watch on a very large scale and see the Japanese in an everyday setting without needing to know any of them personally.

I hate second hand and vintage shops in Tokyo. In the states and UK these shops offer cool retro clothes for very cheap prices, in Japan they're the same price as high-end fashion. Seriously, a 20 year old band shirt is like £40 whereas in the UK it would be £2. It's stupid.

I would argue the Tokyo Tower is not just iconic to Tokyo, but essential for tourist to travel to and to enjoy; paying the fee supports workers and the tower. For, without tourists actively paying to enjoy being on the tower may cause unnecessary layoffs and an increase in potential high maintenance costs to keep the tower in proper shape. The building that may give a better view for free do not need the revenue from tourists due to the mass commercial operations within their buildings; renters or leaseholders pay a significant portion rents to maintain their buildings already. It would be like suggesting tourist in Paris should not venture to the top of the Eiffel tower because you can get a better view of it from a distance. Yes, this is true for Eiffel and Tokyo Tower, but one does not have the satisfaction of saying, they were on top of either one if they avoid going to the top of them; like enjoying Mt. Everest or Mt. Fuji from afar. I would pay the $14 and enjoy the tower, and then take 36 views (photos) of the tower from 36 locations around Tokyo as Hokusai did of Mt. Fuji. Remember, Hokusai also has one print where you don't see Mt. Fuji, but only a tiny part of it, because the monks are actually on a trail winding up the side of Mt. Fuji... they are depicted on Mt. Fuji. in a print called, Climbing on Fuji, or 'Shojin tozan.' So, yes; you can avoid paying the fee and going to the top of Tokyo Tower, but then you lose out of saying you were actually there on top of it; which to me is much more impressive than saying you were in some random unfamiliar tall building in Tokyo.

  • jody024
    jody024 1 month ago

That's why i went up a sky scraper instead of the Eiffel tower itself when i was in Paris.

PS: Actually Tokyo Sky Tree is the tallest Tower in the world and the second highest man made structure overall.

I'm glad I saw this, I've been to Tokyo 3 times and I will certainly be looking for those free views next time, I loved Tokyo Tower.

The SkyTree was very quick for me though, maybe because on my 2014 Winter Visit, I got there before it opened and the sky was perfectly clear.

Subbed, I love your editing style and once again, will look at these places next year

I personally love Sky Tree, but I've never been up the tower because it's just not my thing. I lived near asakusa so I'd go there and buy bento for late night dinner when it's like 2 hours before closing time (they usually have bentos that's cut down by half the original price!!!!).
I also LOVE Harajuku SO MUCH!!!!! I go there for the food, and idol shops hahaha! And I totally agree that there are good things right off the main street which is worth exploring! (And a better/quieter alternative of harajuku is Shimokitazawa, which is bigger and have more original shops)
