If they don't open the boxes, they couldn't possibly know that none of the seeds are genetically modified. They also couldn't know if they contain illicit drugs (and their seeds). In fact, you could hide just about anything there that wasn't very heavy and would give itself away. Many, many crops have been modified in one way or another, without them people would starve, so it's an odd rule to have.

No Marijuana would mean that after the cataclysmic event their would be one less source of rope, weaving material & fishing bait. It seems a bit short sighted to store those seeds based on its legal status, considering humans have been cultivating Marijuana for 6K years. Maybe if they used Heap not "Purple Haze" Marijuana.

I was a little surprised at the "no drugs". Surely preservation of genetic diversity is useful for pharmaceuticals too.

There is a saying when it xomes to insurance: it's not worth it unless you cannot afford to replace what you would lose. The genetic diversity of our plants is so very irreplacable... whatever the costs of the vaults, however unlikely they will be needed (though as has been mentioned they've been used once already) they are worth it.

With regards to the GM crops, my question is whether an exception will be made for SpaceX and their GM fuel producing plants. These I would imagine act as the perfect candidate for the Seed Vault project as it would allow for an accelerated restart of civilisation if the worst were to happen. This is very much something I would like to ask the engineers at the Svalbard Seed Vault.

why no GMO? all the seeds we have now and in storage there are the products of years of selective breeding which is essentially genetic manipulation. just compare the (natural) corn we have now from the parent stock called teosinte. besides, 80 to 90 percent of corn grown in the US now are GMOs.

I have a feeling that excluding GMO seeds is going to basically make most of the contents of this vault irrelevant. In the coming decades, problems crops have with climate change, pests, and other adverse factors are going to be increasingly dealt with using genetic engineering rather than the crossbreed-and-pray method, and non-GMOs will end up being considered largely undesirable as crops and seen as a step backwards because they're simply not competitive in terms of hardiness and productiveness.
