Third-largest iceberg broke off Antarctica

  • Added:  12 days ago
  • One of the largest icebergs ever recorded has broken free of Antarctica. A crack in an Antarctica's Larsen C ice shelf is responsible for calving the colossal new iceberg, which is roughly the area of Delaware state and the volume of Lake Michigan.

Researchers noticed the distinctive rift in Antarctica's ice in 2010, which has grown rapidly since 2016. The iceberg calved between July 10 and July 12, researchers said.

"Breaking news! The iceberg has fully detached from Larsen C - more details to follow soon," Martin O'Leary a glaciologist at Swansea University, wrote in a tweet early Wednesday morning for Project MIDAS.

A NASA Earth-observing satellite called MODIS was among the first to photograph the colossal ice block freed of Antarctica's grasp. It appears the iceberg has largely stayed intact.

Ok libtards. Answer me this. If this global climate change...err...warming...err...cooling thing is "real", why are the only solutions to it are to shut down businesses, fines, jail time, and tax increases. Not one solution has been put forth to solve this "problem".

The sunspot intensity directly affects the strength of our protective shield, the magnetosphere, ionosphere etc. A weaker sunspot cycle means a weaker shield. A weaker shield = more solar particles, solar wind and cosmic rays penetrating our atmosphere. Charged particles from the solar wind excite plasma and gases inside earths crust causing earthquakes and erupting volcanos, some under Antartica. Cosmic rays induce cloud cover causing torrential rain. Weather patterns also cause earthquakes, deep low pressures or blot echoes. The science shows that the sun is progressing towards another grand solar minimum, I'm sure you believe that it will have no affect to our planets either, right? I wonder what happens to coral when UV index is 13-15? can we say "Bleached", I know alot of plants burn up...

where's the vegans? give us your best recipes trying to tempt us rather than shame is into a lifestyle... I'm not really about it I'm an omnivore but it's shit like this that's got me eating veggie and vegan a lot of the time... I still eat meat but it does help to lessen our impact to eat LESS animals and MORE plants. Methane is at time 90% more effective at trapping heat than CO2. It's a by-product of our industrial big Animal Agriculture system. If we are to have it- it would be best if thy could figure out a way to do methane-capturing, and utilize the gas for energy. There is a landfill in...I forget, south San Francisco, and they capture methane from the decomposing organics and turn that into energy there. It can be done. But more sustainable smaller scale dispersed rotating animal agriculture is must better for the land and climate, and can actually aid in restoring soils and even carbon sequestration if you get animals and nitrogen fixing carbon loving plants in rotation with each other. Wild Idea Buffalo Company is the best example I know of.

How can this contribute to sea level rise, when water freezes it expands and is less dense than water so if all the ice that is floating melted sea levels would actually drop. It's the ice on land you need to worry about.

Global warming is irreversible but we could slow it down by shutting down all nuclear power plants and decrease all carbon emitting factories, cars, and etc. BUT this wouldn't happen because most of us humans are selfish, hate driven creatures who only care about our own skin and our possessions.

We humans are surely beautiful in mind, body, and soul. but the planet is even more beautiful before we came, we weren't needed here but carved earth as what we see fit. We and our planet are destined to die. sooner or later we will perish.

i was having second thoughts in commenting this but hmmm... We all can see our destiny or fate or whatever we just don't care whatever happens.
